The Town

from The Rider by Blackwood Overdrive

/

about

In the middle of the edge of nothing
Among groomed gardens and quaint housing
He’s welcomed by beaming townfolk
Everything’s just so
A man and his wife invite him for dinner
Another suggests a round of cards
A third proclaims a well-earned drink
And that drink, thinks the rider, would be deserved

And yet he can’t shake the feeling...
That all of this was for him
And not one thing is missing
When all that was is gone

It’s so pure it’s rotten in this town
Sugar-coated, over-bloated
So damn sweet it’s rancid to the core
So pure it’s rotten in this town
A hardboiled shell, hiding its hell
It’s so pure it’s rotten in this town

The beer is dark, weighty and hoppy
The meat is succulent and tender
Of cattle bred and slaughtered well
Everything’s just so
Most of the hands he’s playing are winning
His company seems to be taking it well
A man again buys him a drink
And that drink, thinks the rider, is less deserved

And now he can’t shake the feeling...
That paradise can not be
That other people can not be
When all that was is gone

Something’s so pure it’s rotten in this town
Sugar-coated, over-bloated
So sweet it’s repugnant and rancid to the core
Something’s so pure it’s rotten in this town
A hardboiled shell, hiding its hell
It’s so pure it’s rotten in this town
